City manager John Mauro announced on Tuesday, April 1, his new plan to remove all of Port Townsend’s roundabouts and replace them with traditional traffic lights.
“Look, we gave them a good run, but it’s clear that the people of Port Townsend are just not capable of merging like responsible adults”
— John Mauro, City Manager
“Look, we gave them a good run, but it’s clear that the people of Port Townsend are just not capable of merging like responsible adults,” Mauro said in a speech given from the top of the city hall steps.
When asked what inspired this abrupt turnaround from the current street planning policy, Mauro cited his personal desire to make the city less friendly for cyclists and pedestrians. “Sure, I’m known for being a big bike guy, but I finally realized that it’s better for our economy to sacrifice environmental and personal health.”
Your last chance to experience roundabouts in Port Townsend is on Tuesday, April 1. After that, the city will return to a traffic light system, with the exception of the roundabout in front of Penny Savers. That roundabout will become part of the new “land ferry” program, and their use will need to be booked online.
