OP-Ed: Transaction

Opinion by Bill Wise

Many things in our human world begin with a transaction. But long before that exchange actually occurs, a complex process unfolds. First comes awareness-the moment we notice a need, a possibility, or an opportunity. Next, empathy enters the picture, connecting us to the people or circumstances involved. Then come the questions: What are my options? Am I able to respond? Am I truly motivated to act? And how much am I willing to commit?

All of this-awareness, empathy, and careful consideration-happens before any transaction takes place. It is in these quiet moments of reflection that the foundation for meaningful action is laid.

And then, it happens. The moment arrives-the transaction is complete. There is celebration. Joy and gratitude fill the air. At last.

This is perhaps what it feels like when a working family in Jefferson County finally finds secure housing. Their celebration is made possible by the compassion and commitment of people throughout our community-people who dedicate themselves to providing affordable homes.

Organizations like Habitat for Humanity East Jefferson County and Bayside Housing and Services, along with other dedicated organizations, work tirelessly to turn this dream into reality.

Just as importantly, there are caring individuals-neighbors who open their ADUs, convert their vacant homes for rent, or choose to share their living space through mutual agreements of care and support. These acts of generosity create the foundation for stability and hope.

Yes, we face a housing crisis. Too many homes stand empty while working families struggle to find a place to call their own. The cost of housing has become overwhelming for so many. But even in the face of these challenges, we need to celebrate each victory, each transaction.

With each success, we inspire others to join in-to open their doors, to offer a helping hand, to make a difference in someone’s life. Every act of kindness, every shared space, every affordable home created is a step toward a stronger, more caring community.

Thank you to everyone who cares, who works, and who makes these life-changing transactions possible. Your efforts transform lives, one home at a time.

Celebrate.

Post Script

For several years, I’ve been involved with the Housing Solutions Network. When people ask me, “How are you feeling?” my answer, until recently, was something like: “I feel like I’m swimming upstream and going backwards.”

But I realized recently this outlook was weighing me down-and it wasn’t fair to the work we’re doing or the people who support us. If I shift my perspective to notice and appreciate the small victories-each single, life-changing transaction-my story becomes much more hopeful, for myself, for those I work with and for those who ask about my work.

Celebrate. Let’s remember, every step forward counts.
