PORT TOWNSEND, WA — After more than 11 years of service to the Port Townsend community, Melody Sky Weaver has announced her resignation as the City’s Community Services Director. Secretary of State Steve Hobbs has appointed her to serve as the 31st Washington State Librarian, effective October 1, 2026.

Sky Weaver was the City’s first Community Services Director, a role she assumed in January 2025\. In this capacity, she oversaw an integrated department that combined Library, Parks and Facilities, and Arts and Culture. Prior to this, she served as the Port Townsend Public Library Director for a decade, a tenure that outgoing City Manager John Mauro credits with elevating the library's profile statewide. “Melody has truly put our public library on the map,” Mauro stated, noting her "courage and leadership" in launching the new integrated department.

Her career in public service spans over two decades, including roles at Kitsap Regional Library, Boise Public Library and the Garden City Public Library, where she began as a children’s librarian. A graduate of the University of Washington Information School with a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree, Sky Weaver has a background in fine art and is a passionate advocate for equitable access to public institutions.

In her new role, Sky Weaver will serve as the chief executive officer of the Washington State Library, overseeing a wide range of statutory duties. These responsibilities include managing and administering the state library and leading information access and library service development. Additionally, the State Librarian is responsible for establishing content standards for state agency information, promoting electronic access to public information and assisting communities throughout Washington in the establishment and development of local library services.

"Leaving Port Townsend is deeply bittersweet," said Sky Weaver to the Beacon, reflecting on her 11.5-year journey. She called the co-creation of the Community Services Department, or "Department of P.L.A.Y.," a "once in a lifetime opportunity" and expressed immense pride in professionalizing the library, securing grants and stewarding the city's first Creative District. She offered gratitude to her colleagues, volunteers and the community, and hopes the city will continue to invest in the historic Carnegie Library and Pink House. "I will always treasure my time in this vibrant Victorian Seaport," she stated, "and look forward to celebrating Port Townsend's bright future from afar."

“Melody’s record of public service and advancement of librarianship is beyond exceptional,” Secretary Hobbs praised her selection in a press release, stating, “She is passionate and well poised to lead the Washington State Library into its next chapter.”

Sky Weaver’s last day with the City of Port Townsend will be August 28\. City Manager Mauro and his director team will explore short- and long-term approaches for continuing the work of the Community Services Department. Sky Weaver has invited the community to celebrate this transition at the Port Townsend Library on August 27, at 3 p.m.
