**The Trump administration expanded sanctions on Iran and warned foreign governments and companies that they could lose access to the U.S. financial system if they continue doing business with Tehran**. Treasury sanctioned about 60 entities, individuals, and vessels, broadened secondary sanctions to cover digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping as part “Operation Economic Outcast,” which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called an “economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe.” The administration, however, stopped short of immediately penalizing major foreign financial institutions, including Chinese banks, with Bessent describing the move as a “warning shot” and giving countries a “cure period” to cut targeted ties. “Why would I want to blow up the global financial system?” Bessent asked, while warning that the U.S. does not have “infinite patience.” He pledged to sanction a major financial institution by the end of the week and, when asked whether Chinese banks would be targeted, replied that “no one is above the reach of U.S. sanctions.” Trump, meanwhile, is calling foreign leaders with “specific requests” to stop doing business with Tehran. *Today's* **Top Story**
**U.S. debt topped $40 trillion for the first time**. The Treasury Department said the total public debt outstanding reached $40.047 trillion Tuesday, more than double the level from a decade ago. Interest payments have topped $1 trillion this year and are now the government’s second-largest expense behind Social Security. Meanwhile, the Treasury has doubled the size of its buybacks of long-term government debt after 30-year yields reached their highest level in nearly two decades. The government ran a $432.3 billion deficit in July, the highest monthly shortfall in more than five years, as the deficit for the first 10 months of fiscal 2026 has already passed the total for all of fiscal 2025\. Trump, who promised during his 2016 campaign to eliminate the national debt within eight years, has instead added roughly $11.6 trillion in additional debt across his two terms so far. **Trump paused his 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods for three days**, claiming that the U.S. and Canada “have a DEAL!” Prime Minister Mark Carney, however, said only that “substantial progress” had been made and that “important work” remained. The White House nevertheless claimed Canada had committed to remove trade barriers affecting U.S. alcohol, dairy, and motor vehicles, while the U.S. trade representative said the agreement would include “comprehensive market access for all American goods,” economic security commitments, and digital trade alignment. Canadian officials haven’t publicly confirmed those commitments. Trump, meanwhile, said the U.S. may lower its 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and hinted at reducing auto tariffs.
