Rachael Nutting, the Jefferson County Beacon's new Deputy Editor.

Hello, Jefferson County.

You may already know my name—and if you've followed the Beacon's coverage of our local housing crisis, the Comprehensive Plan debates or the past challenges within the local humane society, you've likely read my work.

I'm Rachael Nutting, and I've had the privilege of reporting on our community over the past year, covering the issues that shape daily life in Port Townsend and across the county. With our beloved editor and founder, Nhatt, embarking on new adventures, I am stepping in as the “light-keeper” during the Beacon’s transition.

I believe local news isn’t a luxury; it's a lifeline. I come to this work with curiosity, persistence and a deep commitment to community. Whether I’m reporting on local housing efforts, unpacking our local government’s complex agendas or helping with the “lighthouse,” my goal is the same: to give you the information you need to be an engaged, informed citizen.

The Beacon is more than just a news outlet. It's a nonprofit, independent newsroom dedicated to serving this community, guided by a commitment to impartiality and freedom from undue influence. We have no paywall because we believe the news that affects your family, neighborhood and future should be accessible to everyone. That's a value I take seriously.

I've sat through packed city council and county commissioner meetings where tempers flared and neighbors disagreed. I've spoken with longtime residents who fear being priced out of the community they helped build. I've listened to local workers describe the impossible search for affordable housing. And I've tried, in every story, to cut through the noise—to move beyond the incendiary social media posts and get to the facts.

As a lifelong local myself, I value our community’s well-being over catchy headlines.

My message to you:

This is your paper. As the interim/deputy editor, I'm here to listen, ask tough questions and celebrate what makes Jefferson County home. I want to hear your story ideas, concerns and feedback. I want to ensure the Beacon continues to reflect the voices of this community—all of them, especially the underrepresented. As the Beacon embarks on this transition, I assure you we will not lose the unique voice our readers value.

You can reach me directly. I'll see you at the grocery store, schools, community events, council chambers and wherever the stories take us.

Here's to the work ahead and to the community we serve together.

Rachael Nutting
