Letter to the Editor: "Taxes are the Price we pay for Civilized Society"
Our Jefferson County community has the opportunity to support a part of our infrastructure that has no dedicated or mandated funding while representing a most important quality of life service for all of us. The county's 23 parks include six in Port Townsend. One of those, Memorial Field, is the only lighted ball field in the county. The county's six community centers include ones in Port Townsend, Tri-area, Gardiner, Quilcene, Brinnon and Coyle. The fairgrounds, 4-H, and all associated recreational programs are also in danger of being terminated.
You don't like taxes, you say? No one does, but to quote the late Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, "Taxes are the price we pay for civilized society". Let's support our community's quality of life and vote 'Yes' on Proposition 1 on our current ballot.
